Although John often experienced extreme difficulty in meeting deadlines, when there was no pressure to produce he could dash off wonderful stuff in no time at all. These amusing animal poems are examples. John would go into the bathroom to shave, and come out with a fully-formed poem, composed in about three minutes.

As with so much of John’s work, these poems repay a second reading. Daft though they are, they are also very subtle.
